ROUTINE FISHING EVENT IN BIRNIN KEBBI

Time to savor some protein

As is usual with Birnin Kebbi, a routine fishing activity took place yesterday and today along the channels of the river. This kind of event takes place once or twice a year and the idea is to give fishermen an opportunity to dive in, with their nets and all that, catch some fish and display it for sale to curious buyers, right at the river side and on the spot.

I missed the yesterday event at the Dukku side because I just did not get the information on time. So, today I headed for the riverside to catch some fun, watch the fishermen do their thing and enjoy the moment they drag their fishing net out of water to empty their catch into a calabash.

Buyers, mostly from Birnin Kebbi and environs take advantage to bargain prices, fill their leather bags and move out of the arena to their houses into the waiting “Baba-Oyoyo” arms of their kids. Time to feed on some protein. The fish are also taken into the markets for sale to interested buyers.
